The film is based on the writings of Charles Reade, which inspired Queen Victoria to overhaul the deplorable conditions of the era’s prison system. Scottish-born director David MacDonald later helmed the unusual British sci-fi thriller Devil Girl From Mars, as well as episodes of the eerie Boris Karloff TV-series “The Veil.” Script writer H.F. Maltby also wrote the dialogue for Tod Slaughter’s Sweeney Todd and Crimes At The Dark House.

Former judge Justin Playfair (George C. Scott) lost his wife a few years back, and ever since he’s thought he’s Sherlock Holmes, determined to find his archnemesis Professor Moriarty, in this thoroughly charming tale of madness and romanticism. Playfair (er, Sherlock) is about to be committed by his brother, who wants his money, when by serendipity he’s teamed up with psychiatrist Dr. Mildred Watson, no less (Joanne Woodward). She finds him fascinating, being a bit daffy herself, and together they get involved in various intrigues, mostly aimed at evading the medical authorities, but which allow the two to fall in love. Though the farcical tone of the film keeps it a lighthearted comedy, the heavy-handed slaps at authority, who are set up for such abuse, seem programmed to succeed. To what degree is lunacy, charming though it may be at times, an appropriate reaction to complex times? “To the utmost degree!” says this film, though the viewer may enjoy it and still disagree. During a comic battle in a supermarket (reminiscent of a silent comedy pie fight), one patient chases her keeper with an oversized hypodermic to the rallying cry of “I hope the loonies win!” That expresses the sympathies of the film nicely. –Jim Gay

Chow Yun-fat in his smooth, controlled Better Tomorrow mode as a charismatic gang lord. It’s a derivative mob chronicle, enjoyable but flat-footed to the point of incoherence (most of the visual and character transitions are bungled). Basically it’s about two young brothers who get into crime in the ’50s, after the super-cool “nice” gang boss, Chai (Chow), shields them from a nasty older gangster with a shaved head. Eventually one of the brothers, Yung (Alex Man Chi-lung), betrays Chai, strangles a lovable fat Thai drug smuggler, and goes into business for himself. The second, good brother emigrates to Malaysia to open a seafood restaurant. The movie makes no sense morally: Chow’s character is a drug smuggler, but he’s romanticized because he rewards loyalty and loves puppies. The tangled undergrowth of brother-love, father-love, boss-love, and he-manly loyalty–almost none of it thought through or sorted out–would be far too rich an emotional stew for most American films. The sequel, Tragic Hero, is actually a better movie. –David Chute

Adam Sandler fans will find the animated movie 8 Crazy Nights to be another flowering of Sandler’s absurdist goofiness. People who find Sandler completely annoying will be triply annoyed by 8 Crazy Nights, because Sandler does the voices for three different characters: Davey Stone, a boozing, belching, self-loathing loser who hates the holidays; Whitey, a tiny old man who tries to rehabilitate Davey; and Eleanor, Whitey’s neurotic twin sister, who seems not to have left her house in years. Fans will find the slapdash musical numbers and scatological humor hilarious; foes will find them tiresome and banal. But even Sandler’s advocates won’t care about the by-the-numbers plot of holiday redemption; you see, Davey’s parents died on the first night of Hanukkah, and he just needs to cry about it.
